Four things decide whether a first night outdoors works: staying warm, staying dry, eating properly and sleeping on something adequate. Everything else is optional. The cheapest route to all four is to buy the sleep system, which is personal and hard to borrow, rent or borrow the shelter and the kitchen, and decide what to own after you know whether you enjoy it.
The four things that decide whether a first trip works#
Warmth, dryness, food and sleep surface. Everything else on a shopping list is a refinement of one of these or a comfort item, and comfort items do not rescue a night that failed on one of the four.
They are not equally likely to fail. Dryness usually fails visibly, in the afternoon, when there is still time to react. Food fails mildly. Warmth and sleep surface fail at 03:00, silently, when there are no remaining options, which is why they deserve the money and the planning. A person who is warm and horizontal will forgive a bad dinner. The reverse is not true.
There is also an ordering argument. Sleep quality determines whether day two happens at all, and whether anyone wants a second trip. A first camping trip is really an experiment about whether your household enjoys this, and a cold night invalidates the experiment rather than answering it.
Buy now, borrow, buy later, or never#
The verdicts below assume a car camping trip of one or two nights in three-season conditions, within an hour or two of home.

Two patterns run through the table. Buy what is sized to your body and used every hour of the night. Borrow what is generic, bulky and used for 20 minutes a day.
Why the sleeping mat is the thing people get wrong#
An uninsulated air bed is a large volume of air with a convection loop inside it. Body heat warms the air on top, that air moves, and the heat is delivered to the cold ground beneath. Nothing in the structure resists that transfer, which is why uninsulated air beds behave like roughly R-1 and feel cold below about 12 degrees C no matter how good the bag is.
Comparable mat numbers come from ASTM F3340, a guarded hot plate test, so R-values from different manufacturers can be compared directly. Heat flow to the ground scales with 1 over R, so the gains are front-loaded: going from R-1 to R-2 halves that loss, while R-4 to R-5 changes it much less. The cheapest fix that exists is a closed-cell foam mat under whatever you already have. It adds roughly R-2, cannot puncture, costs little, and doubles as a seat. If you own an air bed and refuse to replace it before trip one, put foam under it and a blanket on top of it.
The bag matters too, and matters in a specific way: ISO 23537 ratings are measured with the manikin on a specified mattress, so a bag rating already assumes a decent mat. Buy on the comfort rating rather than the biggest number on the label, as how to choose a sleeping bag sets out in detail.
What 1,500 mm actually buys you in a tent#
Hydrostatic head is measured to ISO 811: water pressure is applied to one side of the fabric and the height of the water column, in millimetres, at which droplets appear on the other side is recorded. A 1,500 mm flysheet resists a 1.5 metre column of water, which is a great deal more than falling rain applies.
Pressure is what changes that. Kneel on a wet groundsheet and the load concentrates: a 70 kg person on roughly 100 square centimetres of knee applies 70 times 9.81 divided by 0.01, about 68,700 pascals. One metre of water column is about 9,807 pascals, so that knee is applying the equivalent of roughly 7,000 mm of head. This is why groundsheets are specified far higher than flysheets, and why leaning on a wet flysheet pushes water through fabric that is otherwise perfectly waterproof.
So a cheap tent with 1,500 mm and taped seams is genuinely fine in settled weather. What fails in a storm is rarely the fabric number. The smallest kitchen that makes a hot drink#
One burner, one pot of about 2 litres with a lid, a mug each, a knife, a board and a washing up kit. That is a complete camp kitchen for two people, and it will cook everything a first trip needs. A lid is the cheapest fuel saving available, because an uncovered pot loses heat to evaporation continuously.
The stove decision on a first trip is mostly about borrowing what someone already owns. If you are buying, the trade-offs between canister, liquid fuel and integrated systems are in camp stove types. For one or two nights of car camping, the simplest option that boils water is the correct one.
Food that needs no preparation surface, no draining and no timing beats a menu that assumes a kitchen. Keep chilled items at or below 5 degrees C, the FDA Food Code cold holding threshold, which in a cooler is a question of ice mass rather than box size.
The one-night shakedown protocol#
Run this before the real trip. It is the difference between discovering a problem 20 minutes from home and discovering it 100 miles away.
- Pick the conditions. A forecast low no more than 5 degrees C below your bag's comfort rating, and a site within 45 minutes of home.
- Pitch the tent once in daylight, at home, before the trip. Count the poles and pegs, and find the missing one now.
- Arrive with two hours of daylight left. Everything takes longer the first time.
- Cook the meal you plan to cook, on the stove you plan to use, and boil water twice: once for a drink, once for washing up.
- Sleep on the actual mat, in the actual bag, in the clothes you plan to sleep in. Substituting any of these invalidates the test.
- Record four things in the morning: the hour you woke cold if you did, what you searched for in the dark, what you never touched, and what you wished you had.
The decision rule: if the only failures were comfort items, you have a working system and can extend the trip length. If the failure was warmth or water, fix that before booking anything longer. Then use the car camping checklist to turn what you learned into boxes that stay packed.
The upgrade order once you know you like it#
Spend in the order of what fails first at night, not what looks best in a photograph:
- Mat R-value, raised to match the coldest night you actually plan to sleep out in.
- Sleeping bag, bought on the comfort rating with about 5 degrees C of margin.
- Waterproof shell and a tarp, because rain removes the outdoor living space and a tarp gives it back. Camping in the rain makes the case in detail.
- A tent that suits your actual weather, whether that means wind stability, ventilation against condensation, or floor area.
- Kitchen, once you know what you cook rather than what you imagined cooking.
- Comfort, meaning chairs, a table and lighting. Last, and genuinely worth it later.
The logic is that the first three fix nights, the fourth fixes weather, and the rest fix mood. Buying in the reverse order is the standard route to a garage full of chairs and a cold sleeper.
Common mistakes#
Buying the tent first and the mat last. The tent is the visible purchase. The mat is the one that decides the night.
Buying to the limit rating. On an ISO 23537 bag, limit sits roughly 6 degrees C below comfort and models a curled-up adult on the edge of shivering.
Owning no light. One head torch per person, with spare cells, converts most night-time problems into minor inconveniences.
Cotton as a warm layer. It holds water, dries slowly and keeps cooling the skin. Camp is stationary, and stationary is where cotton fails. See the layering system.

Do I need a sleeping mat if I have an air bed?#
Yes, or at least foam underneath it. An uninsulated air bed contains a convection loop that carries body heat straight to the ground, behaving like about R-1, so it feels cold below roughly 12 degrees C regardless of the sleeping bag. A closed-cell foam mat under the air bed adds around R-2, cannot puncture, and is the cheapest fix available.
Should I rent camping gear instead of buying it?#
Rent or borrow the generic, bulky items that sit unused most of the day: the tent, the stove, the cooler, the chairs. Buy the items sized to your body and in use all night, meaning the mat and the bag, since a borrowed bag that is the wrong length or the wrong rating produces exactly the cold night you are trying to avoid.
What temperature sleeping bag do I need for summer camping?#
For lowland summer nights with lows of 10 to 15 degrees C, a comfort rating of about 7 to 10 degrees C paired with a mat of R-2 or better is right. Buy on the ISO 23537 comfort figure rather than the limit figure, which sits about 6 degrees lower and describes someone curled up and enduring the night rather than sleeping through it.
What goes wrong most often on a first camping trip?#
Four things: a cold night from an inadequate mat, no light after dark, no way to make a hot drink, and no plan for rain beyond going to bed.
