A car camping checklist becomes trustworthy at the point where it stops generating your packing and starts verifying it. That means boxes that are already packed and stay packed between trips, so the list has one job: confirm what is in the car rather than decide it. Build it around four sealed boxes, one water figure and a loading order, and packing becomes a check rather than an evening.
Why a packing list fails and a packing system does not#
Most camping lists fail the same way. They are written the night before, from memory, by someone tired, and they describe items scattered across a loft, a garage, a kitchen and a car boot. The list is accurate and the packing still goes wrong, because 90 listed items demand 90 successful searches. Miss three and you find out at dusk, 40 miles from a shop.
A system changes what the list is for. If the kitchen box is sealed at the end of every trip, the list entry is not "tin opener, chopping board, washing up liquid, 12 more things", it is "kitchen box, contents card signed": 15 searches replaced by one lift. What remains to search for is only what cannot live in a box, meaning food, clothing, medication, cooler contents and anything charged. The boxes absorb the detail, and the detail gets checked when a box is repacked rather than when it is loaded.
Four boxes that stay packed between trips#
The split that survives real trips is by function, not by size:
- Kitchen box. Stove, fuel, pans, utensils, washing up kit, foil, two lighters, salt, oil. Everything here duplicates the house kitchen on purpose, because shared items get borrowed and never returned. The cookware guide covers what earns its place.
- Sleep crate. Bags, liners, pads, pillows, a pump, a patch kit. Stored uncompressed at home, then loaded whole.
- Shelter bag. Tent, poles, pegs, mallet, guy line spares, groundsheet, a small tarp. The mallet lives here rather than in the garage toolbox, because the toolbox does not come camping.
- Utility box. Head torches, batteries, first aid, bin bags, kitchen roll, a folding basin, cable ties, tape, wet wipes. The box that quietly makes the trip work.
Three rules keep them honest. Every box carries a contents card taped inside the lid. Nothing leaves a box for home use without being written on that card. And each box stays under about 15 kg, so one adult carries it from car to pitch in one trip, inside the 25 kg that UK HSE guidance treats as the top of the range for a two-handed lift at waist height.
The arrival in the dark test#
The real test of a packing system is not a sunny Saturday. It is arriving at 21:40 in light rain with tired passengers and a pitch number you cannot read. Everything needed in the first ten minutes must be reachable without unloading the car.

You can rehearse this on the drive. Load as if for a real trip, wait until dark, and run the sequence: torches on, tent out, groundsheet down, tent up, kettle on. Anything you had to move something else to reach is in the wrong place, and anything you could not find in 30 seconds belongs in the cabin. How much water to carry, and the arithmetic behind 5 litres#
Water is the heaviest thing you will pack and the easiest to under-estimate, because at home it is free and invisible. WHO technical guidance for emergency settings puts drinking needs at 2.5 to 3 litres per person per day in average conditions with moderate activity, plus 3 to 6 litres for cooking. The Sphere Handbook's 15 litres per person per day covers bathing and laundry too, so it describes living somewhere rather than camping there.
On a site with taps, carry 10 litres anyway so nobody walks to the standpipe before the first brew. With no water on the pitch, work to about 5 litres per person per day:
- Drinking: 2.5 to 3 litres, higher in heat or with children running.
- Cooking, including pasta water you pour away: about 1 litre.
- Washing up and hands: 1 to 1.5 litres if you are careful, more if you are not.
Run the arithmetic before choosing containers: four people over two full days is 4 times 5 times 2, or 40 litres. Water is 1 kg per litre, so that is 40 kg, outweighing the tent, bags, pads and kitchen box combined. It belongs low and forward on the boot floor, strapped.
Split it across containers you can lift. A 25 litre jerrican weighs 25 kg and needs two people or a trolley; two 10 litre containers plus a pair of 5 litre bottles carry the same volume and let one adult move water alone. Packing food by meal instead of by ingredient#
Packing by ingredient is how a bag of flour travels 200 miles to make two pancakes. Packing by meal means one labelled bag per meal holding every non-perishable component, down to the stock cube and the foil. Perishables go into the cooler grouped the same way and in eating order, so Sunday breakfast sits at the bottom and stays coldest.
Two nights for four is six meal bags, a snack box and a brew kit. The benefits are boring and large: a missing component is visible before you leave, anyone can cook a bag without a briefing, and you carry no surplus. The camp food calculator handles quantities.
The cold chain is the part with a number attached. The FDA Food Code sets cold holding for meat, dairy and similar foods at 5 degrees C or below. A cooler holds that through ice mass, not insulation alone: insulation only sets how slowly the ice disappears. Sizing the ice rather than the box is the trick, and the cooler ice calculator does the melt arithmetic, with the physics in coolers and ice.
Two rules follow. Pre-chill everything including the cooler itself, since a warm cooler spends its first hours of ice budget cooling its own walls. And keep drinks separate: the drinks box gets opened 20 times a day, the food box four.
Loading order: the last thing in is the first thing needed#
Load in reverse order of use, treating the boot as three zones.
Bottom and forward: water, the kitchen box, chairs and tables. Heavy, dense and not needed until the tent is up. Furniture is bulky rather than urgent, exactly the profile for the bottom of the stack, and camp comfort and furniture covers what is worth bringing.
Middle: sleep crate, clothing bags, and the cooler with its lid accessible, since it gets opened before the tent goes up.
Top and boot mouth: tent bag, mallet, brew kit, warm layer bag, with torches in the cabin. Last in, first out.
There is a safety argument as well as a convenience one. EN 12195-1, the European standard behind road load securing calculations, uses a design acceleration of 0.8 g forwards. A 20 kg cool box in a 0.8 g stop pushes forward with 20 times 0.8 times 9.81, about 157 newtons, the same force as the weight of a 16 kg object appearing suddenly at head height. So nothing heavy sits above the rear seat backs, nothing hard travels loose in the cabin, and a full hatchback or estate boot wants a cargo barrier or a strap through the load hooks.
What to leave at home, and the restock habit#
Most overpacking is a fear response, best handled with a rule rather than an argument. If an item stays unused across two consecutive trips, it leaves the box for a crate at home. If you miss it, it goes back. Nothing is discarded, so nobody has to defend the decision.
Reliable candidates: the second stove, the full spice rack, a mains-powered air bed pump for a site with no hookup, glassware, the large axe, a first aid kit nobody can use, and a wardrobe of clothing instead of a layering system. Rain kit is the exception, the one category where being under-equipped ruins a trip rather than inconveniencing it, and camping in the rain makes the case for the tarp you will resist packing.
The restock habit is what stops the whole system decaying. Within 48 hours of getting home:
- Unload the cooler and the food bags, and nothing else.
- Dry the tent and groundsheet fully before they go back in the shelter bag, and hang bags and pads uncompressed. Manufacturers warn about mould on fabric packed damp, and a weekend is long enough for it to start: storing gear between trips covers the rest.
- Refill consumables: fuel, batteries, matches, bin bags, kitchen roll, first aid.
- Mark the contents cards in pencil, two columns: what ran out, what was never touched.
- Seal the boxes and put them back in one place.
Step four keeps the checklist honest, because it is the only feedback the list ever gets.
Common mistakes#
Rewriting the list every trip. A list you rewrite is a list you do not trust. Amend the same one in pencil, and keep it with the gear: a checklist in a phone note gets superseded by another phone note. Do not pack the tent first either, since it ends up under everything and guarantees a full unload in the rain.
Buying a bigger cooler instead of more ice. Insulation slows melt, ice sets temperature, and cold food needs 5 degrees C or below regardless of box volume. The same goes for one 25 litre water container, which is 25 kg and immobile once the car is unloaded.
Leaving lighting in the boot. Every other mistake is recoverable with a head torch.
Cooking under a closed awning. Any fuel-burning stove produces carbon monoxide, and a zipped porch is a small, badly ventilated room. Alarms built to EN 50291-1 are designed for houses and their siting rules do not translate to a tent, so cook in open air, including in rain.

Keep each box under about 15 kg. UK HSE manual handling guidance puts 25 kg at the top of the range for a two-handed lift at waist height close to the body for men and 16 kg for women, and those figures assume good posture on level ground, not a muddy field at night. Under 15 kg means one adult carries it in one trip.
Do I need a carbon monoxide alarm when camping?#
Alarms certified to EN 50291-1 are designed for rooms in houses and their placement rules do not map onto a tent, so an alarm is a backstop, not a permission. The rule that matters: no stove, barbecue or fuel-burning lantern inside a tent or closed porch, including a barbecue that looks finished, because cooling charcoal keeps producing carbon monoxide.
What is the fastest way to cut packing time?#
Stop unpacking. Keep the kitchen, shelter, sleep and utility boxes loaded permanently, so packing reduces to food, clothes, cooler and charging. The evening spent building the boxes and writing their cards is repaid by the second trip, and the time saved is mostly searching, which is where errors come from anyway.
