Do two wide sleeping pads fit in a 2 person tent?

The headline width of a 2 person tent is usually the head end. Two 25 inch pads need 50 inches at the narrowest point they cover, and NEMO's own fit chart shows which floors have it: every rectangular one, and none of the tapered.

Two wide sleeping pads fit in a 2 person tent only if the floor is at least 127 cm (50 in) wide at the narrowest point the pads cover, which on a tapered tent is the foot end. Rectangular 2 person floors of 127 to 137 cm pass. Tapered floors that are 127 to 132 cm at the head but 104 to 114 cm at the foot do not, and the one maker that publishes a fit chart rates none of them for it.

How wide does a tent need to be for two wide pads?#

At least as wide as the two pads laid edge to edge, at every point along their length. NEMO's Regular pad is a rectangle 20 in (51 cm) wide and its Regular Wide a rectangle 25 in (64 cm) wide, both 72 in (183 cm) long. Therm-a-Rest lists the NeoAir XLite NXT at the same widths, but its thicker NeoLoft at 22 in (56 cm) and 26 in (66 cm).

Combined pad widths, converted from the makers' inch sizes
Pair of pads, side by sideNarrowest floor width needed
Two regular (20 in each)40 in, 102 cm
Regular plus wide (20 + 25 in)45 in, 115 cm
Two wide (25 in each)50 in, 127 cm
Two NeoLoft Regular Wide (26 in each)52 in, 132 cm

Do the sum in inches when the makers publish inches. In rounded centimetres two 64 cm pads come to 128 and seem not to fit a 127 cm floor; in inches 25 plus 25 is exactly 50, and NEMO rates that pairing a fit on a 50 in floor.

Why "a 2 person tent fits two wide pads" is only half right#

Both answers circulate because both are true for different floors. Therm-a-Rest says the floors of most 2 person backpacking tents are 50 to 52 in (127 to 132 cm) wide by 88 to 90 in (223 to 229 cm) long. On those numbers two 25 in pads fit, and that is the answer most people repeat.

The catch is that a tapered floor has two widths, and 50 to 52 in is the head. NEMO's fit chart, the only maker's chart we found that pairs every floor with a verdict, shows the split:

NEMO's published floor widths and fit verdicts for its own pads. "Not listed" means the combination does not appear among the approved options

Every one of those floors is 50 in or more at its widest, so on the headline figure every one would take two wide pads. Only the untapered floors are rated for it. The rule that falls out of the chart is simple: a combination is approved when its total width is no more than the narrowest floor width. The Dagger takes two wide pads at exactly 50 in on a 50 in floor. The Dragonfly takes 45 in of pads on a 45 in foot. The Hornet, Mayfly and Kunai, at 41 to 43 in, are "a tight fit" for the same 45 in of pads. NEMO does not state a rule, but every verdict in its 2 person chart is consistent with this one.

Therm-a-Rest's answer lands on the same line from the other side. Two 26 in NeoLofts, 52 in together, fit a 52 in floor. On a 50 in floor, 2 in short, they "will bulge slightly against the sides".

So the claim that two wide pads need a 3 person tent is wrong for rectangular floors and right for tapered ones. It persists because many 2 person tents taper, including five of NEMO's eight.

Does pushing the pads to the head end help?#

Less than it looks. A 183 cm pad does not reach the foot of a 208 to 224 cm floor, so it is tempting to slide both pads to the head and claim the wider end.

The gain is under an inch on every floor, because 72 in pads cover 82 to 88 percent of these floors. The model agrees with NEMO: the only regular plus wide pairing it shows with spare width is the Dragonfly's, the only one NEMO approves. A long pad of 76 to 77 in reaches further into the taper and loses up to another half inch.

What does help on a tapered floor is a pad that tapers too. NEMO's Regular Mummy starts at 20 in and narrows toward the foot, so it can sit where a rectangular pad would overfill. Check the pad's own foot width, because shapes differ between makers.

Which floors take two wide pads, and by how much#

For rectangular floors the check is a subtraction, on the makers' published figures.

Spare floor width for two wide pads. The rectangle check multiplies the published width by length and compares it with the published area

Where a maker publishes one width and an area, the area tells you whether that width runs the full length. If width times length equals the stated area, the floor is a rectangle. If the area comes out smaller, the floor tapers, and you need the narrow figure.

Zpacks says the Duplex's 45 in floor takes two adults "on standard width sleeping pads with some wiggle room", which is accurate: two 20 in pads leave 5 in. A regular plus a wide fills it with nothing spare, and two wide pads overfill it by 5 in. A floor generous for two regular pads is no evidence for two wide ones.

What happens when the pads are too wide#

A pad that fills the floor exactly has its edges at the seam where floor meets wall. A pad that overfills it pushes the wall outward along the full depth of its edge, 3 in (7.6 cm) on a pad such as the XLite NXT. NEMO gives the same reason for every combination it marks as tight: the pads "will be pushing against the tent walls, which increases risk of contact with the rainfly and subsequently the possibility of moisture transfer in the event of condensation or rain." The inner's job is to keep a gap between you and the wet fly, and an overfilled floor closes it at the height of your sleeping bag.

Spare width is cheap insurance. A floor that clears the pads by 2 to 4 in (5 to 10 cm), like the X-Mid 2 or the Half Dome SL 2+ with two 25 in pads, leaves the walls standing where they were pitched.

Measure your own tent before you buy pads#

  1. Pitch the tent taut on flat ground, inner fully tensioned, as in pitching and site selection.
  2. Measure the floor width at the seam at the head, at the foot, and 183 cm (72 in) from the head wall (193 cm for a long pad).
  3. Take the smallest figure. That is the width that has to hold both pads.
  4. Add the two pad widths from the makers' specifications, in the units the makers use.
  5. Compare. Pads equal to or narrower than the floor fit. Over by 1 in or more, expect the walls to bulge.
  6. Confirm with the pads. Inflate both fully, lay them in the pitched inner and look along each side wall. If the wall is pushed outward, check under the fly: if the inner touches it, the fit is too tight for a wet night.

Choosing a tent or a pad combination for two#

Work from the pads you sleep best on, then find the floor. How to choose a tent puts a wide pad's footprint at about 1.25 square metres against 1.0 for a regular.

Decision table for two sleepers, from the published widths above

Two wide, 50 inRectangular floors of 50 in or moreEvery tapered 2 person floor aboveOne regular and one wide, or a larger tent

The tent size calculator works the problem the other way, from pads and sleepers to the floor area to shop for. Length is rarely the limit: every 2 person floor above is 82 to 92 in (208 to 234 cm), longer than a 76 to 77 in long pad.

If you swap to a narrower pad to make a tent work, keep the R-value: warmth comes from that, not from width. Sleeping pad R-value explains what to match.

Where this answer stops applying#

  • Double pads are not covered by the arithmetic. NEMO says its Roamer Double "can fit" the Aurora 2P and Dagger OSMO 2P "however it will be pushing against the tent walls", and does not recommend it. It is approved for the Chogori 2P, with a 65 in floor.
  • Wall shape is not in the arithmetic. We found no maker that publishes wall angle against pad fit, so treat floor width as the limit.
  • Specifications change between model years. Every figure here is the maker's own; check the current page before buying.

Common mistakes#

Reading the head width as the floor width. A 2 person tent quoted at 52 in may be 43 in at the foot. On a tapered floor the narrow figure is the one that decides.

Assuming same size name means same width. Therm-a-Rest's NeoLoft Regular Wide is 26 in where its XLite NXT Regular Wide is 25 in. An extra inch per pad is 2 in across the tent.

Ignoring a bulging wall because it is dry tonight. Inner-to-fly contact costs you on the wet night. Tent condensation explains why the inside of the fly is often the wettest surface.

Frequently asked questions#

Will two 25 inch sleeping pads fit in a 2 person tent?#

Yes, if the floor is at least 50 in (127 cm) wide along its whole length, which in practice means a rectangular floor such as NEMO's Dagger OSMO 2P or Aurora 2P. Tapered 2 person floors are typically 50 to 52 in at the head but 41 to 45 in at the foot, too narrow for two 25 in pads.

How wide is a 2 person tent floor?#

Therm-a-Rest puts most 2 person backpacking tents at 50 to 52 in (127 to 132 cm) wide by 88 to 90 in long. That is usually the head width. Tapered floors narrow to 41 to 45 in (104 to 114 cm) at the foot on NEMO's figures, while roomier rectangular models reach 54 in (137 cm).

Can I fit a regular and a wide pad in a 2 person tent?#

Usually. Together they are 45 in (115 cm) wide, which fits any rectangular 2 person floor of 45 in or more and tapered floors with a foot of at least 45 in. NEMO rates the combination as tight and not recommended in its tapered tents with 41 to 43 in feet, because the pads push the walls into the fly.

Is a 50 inch wide tent floor enough for two wide pads?#

Exactly enough, with nothing spare, if the 50 in runs the whole length: NEMO approves two of its 25 in wide pads in its 50 in rectangular Dagger OSMO 2P. If 50 in is only the head width of a tapered floor, it is not enough. Two 26 in pads overfill even a rectangular 50 in floor.

Do I need a 3 person tent for two wide sleeping pads?#

Not if you choose a rectangular 2 person floor of 50 in (127 cm) or more. A floor of 52 to 54 in, such as the X-Mid 2 or Half Dome SL 2+, leaves 2 to 4 in spare. You do need more tent if you want a tapered 2 person floor, because a foot of 41 to 45 in is narrower than two 25 in pads.
